Want to read comics but don’t know where to start? Follow along with me as I read through some of my favorite comics from my childhood, old classics, and brand new stories. I am not a comics expert, but I’ve reclaimed a lost love for comics in recent months.
How to Read Comics Digitally
There are two ways to read comics. You can read comics digitally by purchasing them or subscribing to a reading service. Digital comics are a good choice if you want to try out multiple series before committing to one, or if you want to save money along the way. You can purchase individual comics or subscribe to a reading service through comiXology Unlimited (owned by Amazon). We’ll start our reading with Marvel Comics, so another option is to read through Marvel Unlimited. These services allow you to read comics digitally through a monthly fee, similar to a streaming service for movies and series.
How to Collect Comics
If you don’t like to read digitally, or you simply prefer the feeling of reading an old-fashioned paper book, then you can collect physical copies of comics. Ongoing comic book series are usually released first as individual issues, around 30 pages long, and released periodically. Buying individual issues, called floppies allows you to read stories as soon as they are released. But, older comic books can be hard to find and in some cases, expensive.
Most single issues are reprinted in collected editions. These include trade paperback and hardcover format. Collected editions are a good option to read old classic stories that are near impossible to find. They are also cheaper than buying single issues. This video by Near Mint Condition explains the different types of collected editions. Most of the comic books I own are collected editions.
