Follow me as I read through the Ultimate Marvel universe! Today, I read Ultimate Elektra, the sequel to the four-issue Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra. I collected the individual issues for this series, but you can read them online with Marvel Unlimited.

Ultimate Elektra is back

Elektra Natchios has dropped out of college and is keeping her distance from her friends. Her father unknowingly goes into business with his criminal relatives, which leads to him getting arrested. Desperate to help her father, Elektra enters a life of crime that puts her at odds with her former lover, Matthew Murdock. Through her foray into crime, she fights with the hitman Bullseye and gains the favor of the crime lord Kingpin.

Review

This sequel did not do as good a job as its predecessor. Despite the more serious tone, the story does not feel as realistic or engaging as Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra. The predecessor had one main character: Elektra Natchios. The story was told from her perspective and focused on her journey. This story continues Elektra’s tale, but adds another main character: Matt Murdock! The titles of this story and its predecessor should have been flipped.

This story is not developed enough to warrant two main characters. It also ignores the ending of the previous story. I still don’t understand why Elektra left a goodbye note to her father in the climax of the last series, only to find her living with him just a few months later. Matt also appeared as a competent lawyer, even through he is an undergraduate student. These small details could have been addressed more carefully.

Despite my rant, this is not a bad story. I enjoyed several things. The portrayal of the Kingpin benefits from his appearance in Ultimate Spider-Man. He is still shown as a ruthless crime lord, which raises the stakes of the story. This story presents Elektra’s introduction to the underworld, and she proves herself as a skillful and clever fighter. Overall, it was an enjoyable story, and I wouldn’t mind reading more of Ultimate Elektra.

Score: 7/10

Ultimate Elektra does not really live up to its predecessor, but it can still stand on its own as an enjoyable story for fans of crime dramas and ninja warriors.
