Join me as I read through the Ultimate Marvel universe. Today, I read The Ultimates #7-13. I collected these issues in the trade paperback The Ultimates vol. 2: Homeland Security. You can also read these issues online through Marvel Unlimited. This story occurs immediately after the events of The Ultimates #1-6. In it, we learn that alien species have been working on an invasion of Earth for decades.
Secret Invasion!
It’s the aftermath of the Hulk’s rampage through New York. S.H.I.E.L.D. decided to keep Hulk’s identity a secret from the public. Janet Pym is in critical condition and there is now an arrest warrant for Hank Pym. Disgusted at Janet’s injuries, Captain America tracks down Hank and beats him up.
Elsewhere, Nick Fury has discovered two locations with sleeper agents from an extraterrestrial race called the Chitauri. These aliens are undergoing an invasion of Earth. To keep this information from the public, Fury sends a black ops team led by Black Widow and Hawkeye to eliminate the alien cells. From the information recovered, Fury realizes that the threat of invasion is much more advanced than they were expecting, so he brings in the Ultimates to assist with taking care of the aliens.
The Ultimates learn that there are several alien species on Earth. They also learn of Fury’s black ops team, which includes mutant terrorists Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Fury briefs the team on a plan to eliminate a massive alien base of operations in Micronesia. The base turns out to be a distraction, and the Ultimates walk into a trap, resulting in the deaths of over 20,000 S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
Back home, the aliens have infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and taken over the bodies of several agents (and killed the rest). The only remaining agent is Janet Pym, who is still recovering from her injuries. She is captured by the aliens and transported to their real base of operations in Arizona. The Ultimates manage to get Janet’s distress signal and arrive in Arizona to fight the aliens.
After a lengthy battle, Fury releases and forces him to transform into the Hulk. The Ultimates, S.H.I.E.L.D., and soldiers of the different armed forces manage to defeat the aliens for good. During a celebration at the White House, Janet kisses Captain America. Fury shows his satisfaction at having saved the world.
