Join me as I read through the Ultimate Marvel universe! Today, I read The Ultimates #1-6. These issues introduce the world’s first government-sanctioned team of super-humans. I collected these issues in the trade paperback The Ultimates vol. 1: Super-Human. You can also read them online with Marvel Unlimited.

Super-Humans Are Here to Stay

Warning: This story deals with sensitive issues such as domestic violence.

In 1945, the U.S. Army leads an invasion against a Nazi base in Iceland. The strike is led by Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, a super-soldier and the U.S.’s secret weapon against the Nazis. In an effort to stop a rocket, Captain America sacrifices himself and his body is never found.

57 years later, Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., assembles a team to recreate the super-soldier project. His team consists of Iron Man (Tony Stark), Giant Man (Hank Pym), the Wasp (Janet Pym), and Captain America, who was discovered frozen in the Arctic. Behind the scenes, Fury works with Dr. Bruce Banner (also known as the Hulk) as he tries to recreate the super-solider serum. He also tries to recruit Thor, a former mental patient who believes he is a Norse god of thunder. Initially, Thor rejects Fury’s offer.

Captain America, having woken up for the first time since 1945, tries to adapt to the new world of 2002. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner, frustrated at himself and the world, willingly transforms himself into the Hulk and wreaks havoc in New York. With the help of Thor, Fury’s team manages to defeat and capture the Hulk. The team is well-received by the public, and are dubbed The Ultimates.

After their first victory and public appearance, Thor and Captain America have dinner with Iron Man, where they learn that Tony Stark has an inoperable brain tumor. Bruce Banner is incarcerated and drugged, where he will continue working for S.H.I.E.L.D. from his prison for the rest of his life. Hank and Janet get into an argument that escalates to a fight where Hank gravely injures Janet.
