Follow along as we read all issues in the Ultimate Marvel universe. After enjoying 13 issues of Spider-Man, let’s take a step into the near past with Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra. I collected these as single issues, but you can read them online with Marvel Unlimited.

Recap

Warning: This story deals with sensitive issues, including rape.

This story’s main character is Elektra, a college freshman with a martial arts background. Elektra is brave, forward, and despises injustice. She befriends two girls, and starts a relationship with Matthew Murdock. Unfortunately, college life is not safe for her fiends. One of Elektra’s friend is raped; and her father’s business and home is burned down. After the police fail to bring the perpetrator to justice, Elektra decides to take justice in her own hands.

But Elektra doesn’t seek justice. She seeks vengeance. And she crosses paths with a masked vigilante who foils her plans in an effort to protect her. This vigilante is revealed to be her boyfriend Matthew Murdock. Through this story, Elektra must decide how far she will go to seek vengeance and to protect those she loves.

Review

I avoided reading Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra for years. I liked the action in Ultimate Spider-Man and the political commentary in X-Men and the Ultimates. But I didn’t see anything appealing in a love story between two characters I don’t care for.

However, once I started reading these issues, I couldn’t stop until I finished the story. The writers craft a story that deals with real issues. There is a supernatural element to the story in Daredevil’s uncanny powers. But this does not dominate the story. This is essentially a good story that just so happens to feature Marvel characters.

Despite my disinterest in Daredevil and Elektra, reading these four issues made me want to read more of them. I’m looking forward to seeing what Ultimate Elektra has to offer.

Score: 9/10

I can see some Daredevil fans disagreeing with this score, mainly because of how Matt is portrayed as well as his relegation to a secondary character. But taking this story on its own merits, it is a strong story, with well-developed characters, and a storyline that had me invested.
