This is my first weekly comic book recap! After a short hiatus due to work, I was able to sit back and read some books that were in my radar. Here’s what went down this week:
Arrivals
I received three books this week, so I have a lot of content to read.
After binging the first four Alien movies, I was left wanting more. I wasn’t a fan of Prometheus or Alien: Covenant, so I decided to look to the world of comics instead. Lo and behold, I found Aliens Epic Collection: The Original Years vol. 1, which collects a lot of the original issues written after Aliens. Like most Epic Collections, this book is dense, so it will take some time to read through it. I did read the first issue our of curiosity and it was gruesome. Can’t wait to read the rest.
I read that Nightwing by Tom Taylor had been nominated for (and later won) several Eisner Awards. Many other reviews wrote favorably about it, saying it is as good as Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky. So, I decided to get the first trade paperback, Nightwing: Leaping Into The Light. and boy, it did not disappoint! You can read my review here.
Finally, Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: Tales of the Jedi vol. 3 was released recently. These books (Tales of the Jedi) collect stories that happened during the origins of the Jedi Order. I’m a big fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe (or, as Disney now calls it… Legends), and I especially liked the lore behind the origins of the Jedi and Sith. Therefore, this book was a must-have for my collection. I have it on my to-read list, but I want to finish the previous volume first.
Reading Progress
Besides Nightwing, I pulled some old books that I’ve had on my list for a while. First up are the first two volumes of Teen Titans by Geoff Johns. I had read some issues of this run back when they first came out, and I remember that they seemed a bit too edgy and violent for my taste, so I vowed to read them at a later time. Over a decade later, here I am. These books are gritty and violent with just the right dose of teen drama.
Read my review of vol. 1: A Kids Game or
Read my review of vol. 2: Family Lost
I started reading Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky. I have read so many good things about this run, and I started collecting its trades whenever I would find one at a good price. Recently, I finished the first volume and it is amazing. The writing is gritty and dark as expected for a Daredevil comic book, but it doesn’t overdo it. The pacing of the book is incredible. It really feels like you are reading a cohesive story. I am writing a review for vol. 1 and it should be out in the coming days. Next up is vol. 2!
Following the Zdarsky craze, I picked up Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man by Chip Zdarsky vol. 1. I haven’t gotten through the whole thing yet, but so far, I like the tone and environment that Zdarsky sets up, and how Peter relates to his friends and family. So far, I am enjoying it, and I will write a review when I am finished.
What’s Next?
So far, I’ve enjoyed every book I read this week. Next up, I plant to continue some of the series that I started reading, like the Walking Dead and Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont. I also have Fantastic Four by Dan Slott on my list.
Some books that I started reading months ago and haven’t had a chance to finish include the Spider-Verse/Spider-Geddon Omnibus, DC: The New Frontier, and Amazing Spider-Man by J. Michael Straczynski Omnibus vol. 1. The omnibuses are pretty big so it’ll take me a while to get through them.
That’s it for the weekly update, until next time!
